HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

DISC Certified Consultant Transforms Employee Turnover for Dayton Area Organizations

While annual employee reviews and exit interviews are valuable tools, they typically uncover problems when it is too late. Retention of employees has changed over time and the cost is expensive, resulting in about 33% of their salary expense according to Forbes. It used to be very common for an employee to have 20-30 years with the same company, but in today’s culture, the average tenure for workers who are 25 to 34 years of age is 2.8 years according to the 2018 Bureau of Labor Statistics.

DISC ASSESSMENT

With DISC you will uncover what motivates the actions and behavior of your employees and discover how to create a positive culture that aligns with your organizational goals.

IS THE WORKPLACE CULTURE REALLY A BIG DEAL?

Retention and recruitment are hard even at the best of times, and the ability to predictively manage these processes is a key differentiator. If the employee feels valued and respected in the workplace, and the culture is positive, they are more likely to stay with you. Though monetary gain will always play a role in their career path, employees are becoming more drawn to the organization’s atmosphere because of the emotional benefits they receive.

WHAT IS DISC ASSESSMENT?

DISC is an assessment tool used to recruit and filter potential hires and improve work productivity, teamwork, and communication of current teams. Personalities are very complex and DISC assessments will measure your natural behaviors as well as your adapted behaviors. The natural behavior being more the “core you” and the adapted behavior being more “the mask” we put on for others. The information gained from the DISC assessment may then be better utilized to understand the behaviors of your staff and leadership and assist you with building a stronger, more collaborative team.

WHO CREATED THE DISC ASSESSMENT?

Dr. William Marston, a physiological psychologist, who shared it in his book Emotions of Normal People, published in 1928. His DISC theory identified that, while each of us is a combination of all four categories, we can connect our personality to style in varying degrees in the four areas known as: Dominant, Influencing, Steadiness, and Compliant.

WHAT DO I GET WITH THE DISC ASSESSMENT?

Initially with all staff and when evaluating potential new hires, an assessment requiring about 15-20 uninterrupted minutes is completed. From the assessment, a 30-page profile is provided and used for discussion about that employee’s behavior style. Our certified consultant will review the profile with the employee or HR Manager (decided by the employer). With this knowledge you are able to determine areas of strength as well as areas where additional career development would prove beneficial. For new hires, you are able to evaluate behaviors and determine best fit scenarios with teams already in place. You may have two perfectly qualified candidates and this resource provides one more step in the process to help with determining who may be the best fit for the team already in place. For existing employees, you learn how best to communicate with this employee for optimum performance levels. The employee also learns how to communicate when relating to others. Even if the employee is not a “people person”, they should be expected to get along with others. Thought provoking questions are asked in the assessment to assist with developing an action plan to improve interpersonal skills. All of this is done in a non-threatening, safe and fun environment. We all have areas to improve and this tool helps provide insight and solutions to become a “better you”. Call or email LMS for a free consultation.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE DISC PROGRAM?

Pricing is based on the number of employees and the amount of time needed to work with each employee and the HR Manager or Leader (decided by organization). Please call today for a free consultation. We will sit down and listen to your needs and determine the best solution for your team. We do not provide a cookie-cutter style, we customize and stay flexible to work with every situation.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT DISC PROGRAM TO USE?

Use care in selecting your program. Dr. William Marston known as the “Father of the Polygraph” was a brilliant man. He created the foundational theories behind DISC back in 1928 as he studied human emotions. He was not however, a smart businessman and did not protect his program from duplication. When seeking out a reputable DISC program, ask for the “Validation Study” guide which will support the validation and reliability of the reports.

IS IT TRUE THAT I CAN GET IN TROUBLE USING PERSONALITY TESTING FOR HIRING?

We are not created equally and when used for hiring purposes the DISC program must be valid, reliable, EEOC compliant, and have no adverse impact as to gender, race, color, religion, age, or sexual orientation. Legal problems would typically stem from inconsistencies in corporate hiring practices. For example, only asking a select few applicants to take a personality assessment while leaving others out could potentially be considered discriminatory. Our DISC is 100% legal and acceptable for hiring purposes.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISC AND MYERS-BRIGGS?

Posted by Bradley Smith, Ph. D on PeopleKeys, “Much has been written on the differences between DISC and Myers Briggs (MBTI). Both are methods for measuring personality and behavior, but is one better over the other? A recent article suggests that there is one major thing that distinguishes DISC from Myers-Briggs: Reliability.

According to an article called “Why Myers-Briggs is Meaningless” that was published in 2015 by Vox Media, Myers-Briggs personality tests are a very inconsistent way of measuring personality type. The biggest problem the article points out is that when users take the Myers-Briggs test multiple times—even in back-to-back testing sessions—the results are often dramatically different. When taking a Myers-Briggs test on a Monday, you might be labeled an INFJ. Take it again on a Tuesday, and you might come out an ENFP. In fact, their studies have shown that “as much as 50% of people arrive at a different result the second time they take the test.”

There’s no disputing that DISC and Myers-Briggs are both valuable tools that teach us about the complexities of human behavior. But the two tests aren’t the same. Based on different psychological theories and testing strategies, DISC has been shown to have a much higher rate of reliability. When contrasting DISC with Myers-Briggs, a 2015 Validation Study by PeopleKeys reported that the consistency and reliability of DISC was in the 90-95% range. In other words, within a short span of time, people taking the DISC assessment multiple times are labeled with the same dominant style over 90% of the time. When you compare that with the reported 50% reliability rate Myers-Briggs, that’s a difference significant enough to give anyone pause.

The difference in the reliability scores of (Myers-Briggs)MBTI and DISC are high enough to show that the two testing instruments are based on methodologies that allow DISC to clearly stand out as the more reliable measurement of personality and behavior.”
